I had the same problem and found that the rubber on the lower
roller had gotten too hard to do much pulling of old paper. I tried
a typewriter platen rubber rejuvenator and it worked for a while
but not more than a year.

I had finally had the part recovered. Depending on where you are
located there are still places out there that redo them. Here is
