Papa Joe’s „Klimperkasten” Biersalon, a well-known pub in Cologne
for the past 22 years, is a roaring-twenties style bar which includes Joseph
"Papa Joe" Buschmann's unique collection of film projectors, illusion-
and game-machines and automatic instruments from the 'twenties which play
hourly. Papa Joe's sons, restaurateur Marcus Buschmann and engineer Michael
Buschmann, have developed the first self-playing tuba in the world which
now performs at „Klimperkasten”.

In der über 100-jährigen Geschichte der mechanischen Musikinstrumente wurden viele Instrumente (Klavier, Orgel, Geige, Schlagzeug, ...) automatisch zum Spielen gebracht. Niemals gelang es jedoch, ein Blechblasinstrument, wie die Tuba oder das Sousaphon, mechanisch anzublasen. In mehrjähriger Arbeit lösten die Brüder Marcus und Michael Buschmann das Problem und da eine Tuba bzw, ein Sousaphon alleine nicht auf Dauer unterhalten kann, wurde dem Blasinstrument noch ein Akkordeon zur Seite gestellt. |
Why the Pneuphonikers are a world-novelty
In the over 100-year history of mechanical music instruments, many instruments were brought to play automatically (piano, organ, violin, percussion, ...). There was never any success, however, with mechanically blowing a sheet metal wind instrument such as the tuba or the Sousaphone. After several years work the brothers Marcus and Michael Buschmann solved the problem, and since a tubaist or Sousaphonist can't permantly entertain all alone, the wind instrument was placed beside an accordionist. |

Mechanics at the valves
| Pneumatisches Ventil erzeugt den Ton
In einer 3-jährigen Entwicklungszeit gelang es ihnen, die Tonerzeugung durch ein sehr schnelles pneumatisches Ventil herzustellen, wobei passend zum jeweiligen Ton, die Tuba-Ventiltasten gedrückt werden. Wie von Geisterhand bewegen sich die Tasten der Tuba und die des Akkordeons. Beide Instrumente gestatten sowohl in der Spielgeschwindigkeit, als auch in der Tonlänge eine übermenschliche Spieltechnik. |
Pneumatic valve generates the tone
During a 3-year development period they succeeded in producing the appropriate tones, using a very fast pneumatic valve, that match the respective tone needed when the tuba valve keys are pressed. The buttons of the tuba and those of the accordion move as by a ghostly hand. Both instruments allow a superhuman playing technique in the tempo as well as the tone duration. |

Life-size dolls play numerous melodies with accordion
and tuba
The life-size doll that plays the tuba is at the side of another mechanical accordionist. The two puppets and their heads move synchronized to the music, and at the last chorus the accordionist rises up with his instrument. |

| Fast hundert Melodien, Oldies und aktuelle Hits, die speziell
für Akkordeon und Tuba arrangiert wurden, können die 'Pneuphoniker"
spielen. Die meisten Stücke wurden von "Papa Joe" Buschmann
arrangiert und über Keyboard selbst eingespielt wurden, um "die Musik
zu lassen spielen."
Mit 128 Lautstärkestufen pro Ton spielen die Instrumente alle musikalischen Feinheiten: Von fortissimo bis pianissimo. Die von Rita Buschmann ausgestatteten lebensgroßen Puppen bewegen sich zur Musik, und der Akkordeonspieler zeigt nicht nur Gesichtsmimik, sondern steht sogar während des Spielens auf. |
The "Pneuphikers" can play almost one hundred melodies,
oldies and current hits, that were specifically arranged for accordion
and tuba. "Papa Joe" Buschmann himself arranged most of the songs
and transferred them via keyboard to "let the music play"!
With 128 volume-grading per tone, the instruments play all musical delicacies: From fortissimo until pianissimo. The life-size dolls equipped by Rita Buschmann move to the music, and the accordionist shows not only facial expression but even rises up during the performance. |
