Plea for New Classical Ampico Arrangements
By Craig Brougher

I hope that Artcraft Roll Co. should try at least to cut some of the
heavy classics for the Ampico that earmark the truly great artists of
the age. Looking through the list, I don't see any listed yet in the
Artcraft catalog. Why not begin with Liszt, Debussy, Beethoven, and
Saint Saens? According to Artcraft, Ampico really needs to bolster
its library in these areas.

I have felt that what our hobby has needed for some time was new
arrangements. So if, in fact, roll arrangements are the equivalent of
the so-called hand-played versions, I, for one, would like to have some
good ones. Not just heavy classics, but some of the great art-songs as
well. Rags are relatively easy to code. You take 'em straight off the
sheet music and you cut 'em straight and cool with as little pedal as
possible. Heavy classics, on the other hand are difficult, and have to
be performed with heart. Only by doing this enough is one able to
truly establish their mastery and reputation, once enough people who
know what good really is, are able to hear it.

[ We still have hope that Ampico coding -- a laborious task -- can
[ someday be assisted by the computer. I don't think it can be
[ automated entirely, though; a skilled musician will probably
[ still be needed for the final editing, to assure that the music
[ is indeed performed with heart. -- Robbie
