Welte Orchestrion at Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow
By Mark Jefford

The recently renovated Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in
Argyll Street, Glasgow, now has a Welte Orchestrion on display in
the East Wing. I believe it was previously in storage but has been
restored.

The instrument is currently played to the public twice a day for
half an hour starting at 11.00 and 15.00 hours, Monday to Friday
but not at the weekend. I learnt this from the help desk at the
museum on Saturday, 22 July 2006, so I didn't get to hear the
instrument and cannot therefore comment on the sound. There is
also a Lewis & Co. organ, built 1901, on which recitals take place.
Details of the recitals can be found at the museum web site
http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/showEvent.cfm?venueid=4&itemid=773

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is located in picturesque Kelvin
Park in the popular West End of the city. Opening Hours are Monday
to Thursday and Saturday 10am to 5pm, Friday and Sunday 11am to 5pm.
Entrance to the Art Gallery and Museum is free of charge at present.
