David, There are companies in China on eBay that make and sell custom
springs very inexpensively. I needed 30 springs and, yes, $4 apiece
at Ace Hardware was expensive!

You give the length, wire size, and outside diameter (OD). For about
$3, you will get a 12-inch long compression spring that can be cut
to lengths needed.

I was able to get 6 springs from each 12" length for my project. Many
companies list so search for others. If you can wait several weeks,
this is the route to go.
