Buying Original Music Rolls
By Bruce Clark

Not long ago, I responded to an advertisement for original Ampico
rolls. I purchased the entire lot. When they arrived home, I
discovered most were hardly playable. Time is beginning to take
its toll on original rolls, and the buyer should be aware of that.

Actually it depends upon how and where the rolls have been stored.
A hot attic, is sure death to rolls, as well as a damp basement.
In climates which have drastic changes between winter and summer are
also very damaging to original rolls.

Original rolls were not meant to last indefinitely. The paper was not
acid free, and therefore many original rolls are crumbling, and not
worth much at all. I advise buyers of original rolls to use caution,
and play each roll before spending hard earned cash on old rolls that
might not play well, or play at all after a few plays.

Fortunately, original rolls can be scanned into a computer and the
information used to produce a new roll on better quality paper.
