Discoveries Inside Mechanical Musical Instruments
By Bruce Clark

I found quite a few different things. Most were logical things, like
tools left by prior technicians, and a screwdriver I had left inside a
piano ten years prior. However, in one home I opened the top of an
upright player and a large rat jumped out.

At the Seneca Army depot I opened a piano and found someone had
barfed in it! (I refused to clean that one.) At the Willard mental
hospital, I found thousands of pills that some patient had dropped
inside the piano rather than taking them.

Some people feel that a piano is a good place to hide the family
silver, guns or cash. I've found those, too.

Probably the most embarrassing things found were twenty or so empty
vodka bottles. They had been making a vibration, and the owner
wondered what the noise was. In another home, a red-faced teenager
appeared just as I removed a box of condoms! (I tactfully told him
I would put them back.)

In addition, most of those old Stoddard Ampicos had those devices
which repeat a section of the roll.
