Junk E-Mail Problem
By Elaine de Saxe

Anti-Spam tactics

Makes interesting reading (as does a lot of MMD!), the differing views
on anti-spam measures. The spam-filtering software may rely on the
incoming mail being flagged as "spam" by the user; if so then it's a
tad too late since it's already been downloaded. I use a mail-viewing
application to see and, if necessary, delete email while still on my
server. This may not be a universally satisfactory system, but it's
something.

There are two good methods of nipping spam before it is generated:

1. Never have an open CC list on any email you send out. Always BCC
email with more than one address.

2. Use an email encoding application for email addresses on web sites.
I use one which may be cross-platform called "Enkoder" which randomly
generates an encryption html which cannot (so far!) be read by spammers
robots.

There may be many other methods of finding people's email addresses but
the above are two positive steps anyone can take.
