Promoting Mechanical Music

I have several times had fifth and sixth grade classes visit my col-
lection.  I usually start off by having them all sit on the floor and I
give a small demonstration of how musical instruments started.  I use a
wood xylophone bar and demonstrate how it makes sound.  Then I play a
small whistle.

I let them place a coin in each instrument, so they can hear and see
how the machines play.  I answer all the questions.  After I am done, I
ask the teacher to give an assignment to tell what they liked and to
draw a picture of what they enjoyed the most.  I have the teacher make
up a book and give it to me.  These books are a great treasure.
