Hupfeld Auto Roll Tracker Operation on Re-roll
By Niels Berkers

Hello all, Scott Hiler asked if it's correct for the roll corrector
on his Claviola to operate on re-roll too. This depends on the type
of roll-corrector. I just restored a Hupfeld Phonola (in a beautiful
Lipp piano). This piano had a roll corrector of the type only used
by Hupfeld (as far as known).

There is a metal rod horizontally running just below the tracker bar;
this rod can push forward on either the left or right side of the roll.
In doing so the roll on that side has a longer distance to travel, and
doesn't travel completely straight anymore. It then moves in the right
direction.

I really love this tracking system as it works really great and doesn't
damage rolls in any way. So it's really no problem to have this work
on re-roll. Conventional re-roll systems which move either one of the
spools (take-up or roll) can't do this as the roll moves too fast on
re-roll and will be shredded to pieces.

You say 'as the paper contacts the edge sensors'. The Hupfeld I did
used two holes on the extreme edges of the roll to sense where the
edges are, just like most player systems do. If yours uses tracking
ears, or something similar like found in many Aeolian pianos, this is
another story -- the ears can damage the roll on re-roll. This does
happen at times (bad rolls) with the roll-corrector off; I don't know
if this gets worse if the corrector is still on.

I hope it's of some help.

Regards from the Netherlands,
Niels Berkers
