Robert Heilbuth - Band Organ Builder
By Timothy Tikker

[ Ref. 150831 MMDigest ]

I saw the Steinway piano still in Robert Heilbuth's home when I visited
there last, now the property of Robert's inheritor. Robert's pipe
organ is indeed difficult to play for someone accustomed to standard
American pipe organs, though when I visited Germany I found that
various organs there felt familiar due to my familiarity with Robert's.

I take exception to Mr. Kates dismissing it as junk; it was always in
good working order when I played it (until the last years of Robert's
life, by which time his health deteriorated so that he could no longer
care for the organ), and it had many pipes which Robert had voiced very
carefully and which made good sounds. I actually find the voicing to
be better than a great many more conventional organs I know.
