Repairing Stripped Screw Threads in Wood
By Bob Yorburg

I have read with interest the comments on repairing stripped wood
threads. A few notes:

- Drywall screws are not only inappropriate, they are brittle and
break easily; good luck getting them out!

- Leather in wood holes sometimes contains chemicals that will rust
  screws.

- You can avoid stripping the threads by heating the head of the
screw with a soldering iron. When the screw cools, it will break
free and can be removed without damaging the threads.

I agree that the simplest method is to cut cross grain plugs and glue
them in to secure things correctly. Also, I draw a picture of the
piano on corrugated cardboard and insert the screws that I remove into
the appropriate place on the drawing. That way every screw goes into
it's original hole as needed. As mentioned before, always reverse
thread the screw [turn it backwards] until it clicks before threading
it into its hole.

I enjoy the comments on MMD. Keep up the good work.
