Req for Info to comp.music.research
By Robbie Rhodes

Dear John Fitch and comp.music.research,

I am participating in the discussions of the Automatic-Music moderated newsgroup, concerning the application of new technology to the wonderful old player pianos and fair organs, and also the newer solenoid pianos such as the Boesendorfer SE and Yamaha Disklavier.

A recurring topic is this eager question, "How can I get a piano roll (or a Midi file) made from my favorite old phono recording [of any solo-piano artist from Paderewski to Art Tatum]."

I have made inquiries at MIT and Yale, and indirectly checked on IRCAM, and CCRMA at Stanford, and thus far it seems that the research is still in its infancy. The most viable technique suggested was Matched- Filter processing of the audio.

Could you kindly provide me a summary of activities of this nature known to your group, which I should like to post to the Automatic-Music fans.

Best wishes,

Robbie Rhodes
