Hi, everybody; this is a note to introduce myself. My name is John Phillips
and I've been interested in player pianos for about 30 years. I have a
Gulbransen Upright Recordo player, a Stroud Upright MetroStyle-Themodist 88n
player and an Aeolian 65n Pushup MetroStyle-Themodist player, all of which
I've rebuilt myself. I also have some unrestored instruments; a foot pumped
Duo-Art, a ditto Ampico, a Claviola 73n Pushup and a Melville Clark 58n
Pushup. The latter has a clockwork roll-drive motor. My main interest is
in playing classical music or jazz on the 88n player and I've built up a
pretty large collection of themed rolls. I'm also interested in repairing
damaged rolls and boxes and have produced a number of different Aeolian
replacement roll-box labels using Canvas on a Mac. If these would be of use
to anybody, you are welcome! (They are mostly British Aeolian style - the
U.S. Aeolian T-M labels used a different logo in the background.)
I live in Hobart, Tasmania. (Tasmania is the island just south of the
Australian mainland; politically it is an Australian state.) I teach
physics at the University of Tasmania, am married and have two grown-up
children. They are both scientists but have inherited a genetic defect from
their mother, because like her they aren't at all interested in players.
All is not lost, however, my grandson likes piano rolls a lot.
In case any of you is planning a visit to Australia, don't miss out on
Tasmania. It is very beautiful and crams a vast amount of mountain and water
scenery into a small space. And MM enthusiasts are welcome to call on the
