Classical 88-Note Piano Rolls
By John Phillips

Karl Ellison asks about a source of classical 88-note music. Try the Post-Bid Enterprise mail auction, Karl. It is run by Frances Broadway with help from her husband Michael from her home in a London suburb. About three times a year they put out a HUGE catalog of all sorts of rolls; the last one had about 600 classical and salon music rolls, about 200 65-note rolls and smaller sections of reproducing rolls, as well as song roll and dance roll sections. It will cost you a few dollars per year to go onto their mailing list - just enough to cover their printing and postage costs.

Most of the rolls they advertise are themed (snakebite) rolls, which is why I'm always a keen bidder, but these play perfectly well on an ordinary player. I have rarely ended up with a wrecked roll from them and on the couple of occasions when that has happened they have immediately credited me with the cost of those rolls. Mostly the rolls are in very good shape for 70 or 80 year old lengths of paper. Sometimes I've acquired a roll that seems to have been played only once - maybe when auntie gave it to an ungrateful niece who would have preferred dance music!

I'll send you Frances' address directly Karl, because although I'm sure she wouldn't mind having it publicised here, I haven't actually asked her permission. Come to think of it, isn't Post-Bid Enterprise listed in the huge resource list produced recently?

John Phillips.
