Silicone Pouch Sealant
By Pat Mullarky

Hello, all;

Regarding the Dow Silicone sealer for pouches: The thinner that one
uses for diluting the Dow 111 (or similar) sealing compound can create
problems in some certain cases.

Case in point: I have some pre-cut leather pouches from Player Piano
Co. in several sizes that I use regularly. They are good quality, thin,
supple, and tough. However, one batch of them that I have turns into
brittle, stiff parchment when treated with laquer-thinner diluted
Silicone grease. The laquer-thinner is chemically reacting to one or
more of the compounds used in the tanning process, resulting in a
useless, very stiff pouch. Exactly the same mixture works fine on
other pouches. I'm using a ten-to-one ratio of thinner to Dow Silicone
111.

The same pouches treated with naptha-thinned rubber cement are just
fine.

I haven't tried methyl alcohol as a thinner for the Silicone yet, but
it's another possibility...as is naptha. I wish I had more time for
experimentation!

The answer is, as usual: Test before using !! (I learned the hard
way: I had to re-do a 29-pouch board !)
