"Pumping Lessons" Rolls!
By Jim Canavan
With all the recent discussion of pumping, it's as if the patron saint of foot-pumping was watching over me! On Saturday, I went up to the Carlisle, PA twice-yearly antique & flea market, and had a very timely find...a set of four Gulbransen Instruction rolls which attempt to teach the proper way to play your player! The rolls are titled as follows:
Instruction Roll #1: Teaching Proper Use of Accenting Levers Instruction Roll #2: Teaching Proper Use of Tempo Lever Instruction Roll #3: Teaching Proper Use of Pedals Instruction Roll #4: Teaching Proper Use of Sustaining Lever
You know, even though my piano's a Standard Action and not a Gulbransen, these rolls really helped me "polish" my technique! There are words and pictures on the rolls explaining each exercise, then a melody (from "Dixie" to the Paderewski (sp?) "Minuet") is played which demonstrates the particular point.
The four rolls and boxes are in pristine condition. They fit in a box (in not so good shape), the cover of which is missing.
Has anyone else come across these?
Overall, a very successful flea market...I also found a great deal on a beautiful Improved Celestina 20-note organ!
