Re: Data Base Rollography
By Glenn Thomas

In a recent digest, Robbie discusses his rollography data base. Some time ago, I asked readers to respond to my request for info in creating a music roll data base. The silence was deafening! Robbie's request hopefully will trigger more response.

I have a few thousand 88-note and reproducing rolls plus hundreds of A, G and Wurlitzer APP rolls I am trying to catalog. Although I still haven't made much progress on my project, I'm planning to use Microsoft Access as my platform. Since Access doesn't have a realistic template, I'm having to start from scratch. I would still like to have a template for Access or something similar rather than go through the task of building my own.

I can add the following to Robbie's fields:

The first field should be an index number, created sequentially as entries are added: 1 , 2, 3, etc.

I would separate the roll maker and roll number into two fields, for better sorting and report capabilities. Include a separate field for "Played By". I would add a subjective "musical quality code" such as A, B, C, etc. That helps to identify those you like when you are sorting thousands of tunes, many unknown.

Questions: How to handle recut composites with more than one tune per roll? How about recuts of recuts -- with different labels and numbers?
