Some months ago there was a small discussion in the Digest about
(undesired) ads. Although there is sometimes a lot of undesired e-mails
and also some effort to trash them, maybe the following can help.
Marco Steinbach from Siegen wrote this in German magazine c't 1/97:
"By US Code Title 47, Sec.227(a)(2)(B), a computer/modem/printer meets
the definition of a telephone fax machine. By Sec.227(b)(1)(C), it
is unlawful to send any unsolicited advertisement to such equipment.
"By Sec.227(b)(3)(C), a violation of the aforementioned section
is punishable by action to recover actual monetary loss, or $500,
whichever is greater, for each violation.
"I will report any further violations from your site, which I get
knowledge of to abuse@postoffice.us."

[ Editors note:
[
[ Jody remarked: "I am getting more and more unsolicited e-mail
[ advertisments [here at foxtail]. I usually send a letter of complaint
[ to the postmaster of the domain generating the mail. For instance,
[ "postmaster@foxtail.com" would get to the postmaster for my domain.
[ In my case, that turns out to be me!
[
[ "I find Marco Steinbach's text to be quite interesting. In fact, its
[ intimidating! Perhaps I will use some variation of his text the next
[ time I send a complaint."
[
[ Then, on a hunch, Jody sent a test message to determine if
[ "abuse@postoffice.us" is valid -- It isn't !!
[
[ Thanks, Claus, for sharing "The Great Intimidating Message" !
