Mains Surge Protectors

I'm not sure what's inside the electrical entrance protector here. Does that put my "guy"-ness in jeopardy? I thought it preferable not to open it up and just let it do its thing unmolested. I assume it's similar to the interior protectors but with a higher voltage and current rating. For the record it's a GE Tranquell Surge Arrestor, Model 9L15ECB001, 650 volts AC 2-pole.
To reassure you about my "guy" status, I took apart a new year's noise maker to see what made the noise. Inside is a plastic beating reed.
