Need Help Restoring Metal Plates

What is the best way to restore the worded plates in the spoolbox of my Aeolian Metrostyle Themodist? I carefully used metal polish, which made a huge improvement, but some of the black around the letters is missing. What was originally used here? I thought about paint, but I would think it would wear away too fast. Should I just leave it alone? Same question goes for the plates around the control levers in the keyslip. Help me please! This is my second request for help on this. No replies the first time.
