Why not do it on a "keyword" basis?  Have whatever search engine look for
keywords, and not hierarchies!  This allows the flexibility of having
"Boolean" search strings too.  I'm not sure what you had in mind for
retrieving things, but surely a small chunk of code could be hacked
together to do this, and be interfaced to whatever it is that the
retriever is jacked into.
