Nickel Plating

Is there a safe & sane method for hobbyists such as myself to do nickel plating? Very nearly all of the nickel plated parts in my player have a badly trashed finish -- there is always some rusting, with much nickelling worn away from levers, pedal parts, and other parts that come in contact with the average user.
I know from my other hobby as a Meccano enthusiast (American readers: Meccano is like Erector, but introduced earlier; thus, nickel-plated parts were produced for about 25 years) that commercial re-nickelling is quite expensive if a smooth finish is desired. So if I can take care of this job in my basement workshop, that would be ideal! Devising a precise source of voltage and current for electroplating would not be a problem, as I am an electronics engineer during the day.
If a sufficiently detailed response is not practical, a reference to a suitable book on the subject is quite all right.
And if the whole replating thing proves to be economically ludicrous, any suggestions for an alternate refinishing method that won't make the average enthusiast respond with "ewwwww, ick!"
