Yamaha 'Ivorite' Plastic Keytops
By Don Teach

The keytops that are in question from Yamaha are the same keytops used only on their better grands. Yamaha considers their better grands the C-3 and larger. The C-3 is 6'1". The copyrighted name for these keytops is Ivorite. They will also sell their keytops from the smaller pianos. The electric models such as a PF-85 or P-150 do not use keytops. The Conservatory keytops are produced to have the feel of real ivory.

In the first version of these keytops there were problems. Yamaha replaced any of their keyboards free of charge to any consumer with complaints. Yamaha was the first company to market this type of keyboard in the US, and now Steinway also uses a similar type of keytop. If you decide to buy just the keytops in hopes of installing them on your own piano, you will have to do some trim and bevel work. Consult with your Schaff Piano Supply sales person.
