I've actually been a piano-only guy up to this point, but recently I went
to a "store" (more of a workshop) in Sunnyvale, CA, that has really
helped me catch the music box "bug." This place (The Antiquarian Shop,
tel. 408-732-2226) has a large number of really *really* choice music
boxes, and the prices seem reasonable. I was totally impressed by a
Nicole Freres cylinder box that was about the size of a large piano
bench. It had such a full and large sound to it that it was absolutely
mesmerizing (intoxicating?). I would have liked to buy it just to lull
me to sleep at night (much more effective than sleeping pills).
Anyway, I wasn't able to buy anything there, but I told the gentleman
that I would pass along his number to the MMD. He had at least 20 very
nice cylinder boxes (including an amazing orchestra box), a few Regina
disc units, and a bunch of organettes. He also repairs music boxes as
well; he's pretty active in the local MBSI I understand.
So if you're ever in the area, look him up. Meanwhile, I'll be saving up
my money.
