FS: Steinway-Welte Organ Piano
By Jack Hardman

For Sale: Steinway Model "O" 6'-10" piano, serial number 233543, originally with Welte player action but converted for use as an organ piano. It is presumed to have been converted from a Steinway-Welte reproducing piano in the 1970's by its former owner, Richard Simonton, deceased, of Hollywood, CA.

Mr. Simonton had it connected to his Wurlitzer theater organ. The spoolbox, tracker bar and roll transport were removed to make space for a bank of 92 solenoid valves located above the keyboard. The stack is tubed to the solenoid valves as though to a tracker bar. Standard pipe magnet keying voltage (about 10 vdc) operates the solenoids. Most of the expression mechanism appears to be intact under the piano, and can be connected to the swell shoe on the organ console. The original Welte remote vacuum pump is missing; vacuum has been supplied by an ancient Electrolux vacuum cleaner (included!).

The case is satin ebony, and except for a few scuff marks left by Mayflower while moving the piano from CA to VA, is in very good condition.

The ivories are perfect, as is the sound board. No separation or previous shimming is in evidence. It can be hand played, but would benefit from being voiced. There are two pedals; a damper lift for sustain, and a keyboard shift for "soft". There is no sostenuto pedal.

Located near Washington DC. May be inspected by appointment. Price: best offer. I'm reasonable, and it's in the way. Email direct, or call with your questions. Please forward this message to potentially interested parties.
