Visiting Buffalo NY
By Dave Kerr

We know that Frank Lloyd Wright loved his piano player and player pianos
-- he even designed a few piano cases ( anyone know where they are?).
For those who love his architecture, Buffalo, NY (of which North Tona-
wanda is the first suburb) has six domestic commissions. The famous
Darwin D Martin house is currently fenced, undergoing a comprehensive
restoration and due to open to the public in spring/summer 1998.

The others remain _private_ residences so of course must be enjoyed in
a s-l-o-w walk or drive-by. Well worth the viewing, reminding yourself
that these startlingly beautiful homes were designed and built in the
years 1903 - 1907.

Darwin D Martin House Jewett Parkway at Summit Ave -- can't miss it.

Gardener's Cottage 285 Woodward Ave -- stands out from the neighboring
  homes.

George Barton House 118 Summit Ave -- separated from the Martin
compound by a 1960 apartment building, a tiny, inviting abode in
  the Martin style.

Walter Davidson House 57 Tillinghast Place -- I want to build it.

William Heath House Bird Avenue at Soldier Place circle -- search hard.
Dana House-like and masked by trees, it's smack up against the sidewalk
   -- your jaw will drop.

Martin Summer House Lake Erie shore, Derby, NY -- currently for sale.

During the work week take the elevator and stairs to the open observation
deck atop downtown Buffalo City Hall, built 1929-31; hard to miss -- a
gigantic deco pile of terra-cotta and glazed tile affording a 360 view of
the city and Lake Erie.

This concludes the 'Architectural Digest' portion of this post.

Now then, can someone give us the address of the Ampico smokestack in
Rochester, New York? I understand that there are a couple of Frank Lloyd
Wright homes there, also.
