Donau Mechanical Cuckoo
By Douglas K. Rhodes

"A Bird in a Gilded Cage...!" A customer came into my shop today with a
mechanical cuckoo, manufactured in Germany some 40 years ago. The trade
name appears to be "DONAU - METALL". Below that it says "0 Jewels
unadjustet [sic]".

The wind for the cuckoo's voice is supplied by a reciprocating bellows
system driven by a wind-up motor. The bellows pallets are plastic, and
the two pumpers and reservoir are small rubber domes, about 30mm across.
They dish to about 7mm. They may best be described as each looking very
much like a condom for an extremely poorly endowed individual.

The rubber domes leak, and need replacing. They do not appear to be the
sort of item that can be readily manufactured from typical shop supplies,
nor are they likely to be stock industrial items, whether from an auto
supply or drugstore. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
