Hawthorne's Organ Grinder
By Joyce Brite

Thank you, David Olson, for your contribution concerning the barrel organ
player in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "House of the Seven Gables."

Hawthorne often used vivid descriptions in his stories. He was able to
evoke images that would have high visual impact in his readers' minds.
Since most writers base their characters and settings on incidents that
they have encountered in their own lives, it is entirely possible that
Hawthorne had seen a barrel organ (player) of this kind at some time.

I know that at least one MMD subscriber is keeping a list of motion
pictures that portray mechanical music instruments. Is anyone keeping
a list of books and short stories that describe them?
