My usual piano has a Standard "four-eyed monster" and I have no trouble
at all with any rolls, even those that were eaten by some other piano's
ears.  Why?  I leave the front of my piano open all the time.  (The top
and bottom front panels are in the attic, I think, maybe.)  I have easy
access to the automatic tracker, so I can see its mistakes and correct
them instantly.

Having the front open also allows me selective use of the rewind brake.
I've disabled the spring, of course.  I just push the brake against the
wheel when I need it.  It's a good idea to use the brake on new rolls if
they are rather long, especially if it tends to overflow the flanges.
