Hammers on Steck Duo-Art Grand
By Darrell Clarke

Hello all, I was discussing with another MMD member some of the piano
action problems I have with my 1920 Steck Duo-Art grand and it seemed
that worn knuckles on the hammer flanges might have been a contributing
factor. When I described the knuckles as being one-piece with the
flange rather than the roller type, he was quite surprised since he
believed Aeolian normally used the latter type. Before I do anything
drastic, has anyone else come across original one-piece roller/flanges
on Aeolian grands?

If the hammers on my action have been replaced with non-genuine parts
in the past, it could explain some of my problems. I was presuming the
lack of regulation adjustment was due to wear but maybe it was never
right after a previous replacement. It then poses the problem: how to
specify the correct part when the original is not available? Was there
a range of sizes in use back then, or just one or two and can they be
replaced by a universal type?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Darrell Clarke,
