I found it again!  I loved that site and I was a man on a mission until
I located it again. It doesn't appear to be members-only now, though it
may have been at one point. I'm not an AOL member and I have no trouble
accessing it. The URL that was giving us trouble is an old one but is
the only one that some search engines find. Use this one:

    members.aol.com/oldecrank/phonatics

or, for a direct link to the newsletter archives, use

    members.aol.com/oldecrank2/phonatics_archive.html

I tried both of these today and they do indeed work.

Someone had written that they'd found the dead end but went up a level
and got in.  That site is Edisonshop and is another excellent site, but
isn't Phonatics, just to clarify.  Enjoy!
