Ivory Keytops
By Larry Lobel

[ in response to a note written by Andy Taylor

Andy,

Ivory comes off keytops easily if you hold a very warm iron (don't use steam!
--it gums up the glue) on the keytop for about 15-20 seconds, then carefully
lift the ivory with a thin blade or putty knife. But I don't think you'll be
able to successfully "transfer" the ivories from one piano to another; each
set was originally hand-fitted and were not intended to be interchangeable.

I've heard the Japanese have developed a synthetic ivory that's
indistinguishable from the real stuff; maybe you could find out if that's
available; and I'm sure other list members (myself included) would be
interested to find a source of supply for that.
