Paper for Music Rolls
By Don Teach

Once upon a time I two thought how nice it would be to cut my own
rolls. I thought of several different papers such as the paper used to
wrap a hamburger. I asked someone I respected at the time and he had a
lot to say about the paper used for rolls. That was twenty years ago
and I can only remember the following points, perhaps others can add
to the list. Then someone can find a supplier.

Paper for cutting of rolls is a lot more complicated than one might
think. You have to have paper for one that is not subject to swelling
and shrinking from humidity. Paper has to be stable after punched.
Example: Play-Rite Golden rolls. The first batch had the holes
literally shrink closed after a few years.

Paper has to have a characteristic that does not tear up punches. Most
papers today will wear out a set of dies rather quickly. An excellent
paper for cuttings rolls used to be the brown paper in the top of
mayonnaise jars. It is no longer used. Remember that paper. The Mills
Novelty company used it also.
