I was recently notified of the existence of software that converts .wav
file of instrumental music into a MIDI-format data file.  A trial of the
shareware software is available at

It's called Gamma, and cost $18/license.  The data on the web page says
that the conversion of 1 second of music needs about 30 *minutes* by a 
computer. Very interesting ...
