Good question.  I am not sure.  The plans I have say to make tapered
holes (although it also says it's not "absolutely necessary").  Since
this is a small movable organ I wonder if the reason for a tapered hole
is to give the pipe more stability when it's moved.  Maybe it makes a
better air tight fit?

I have no experience or knowledge to why the plans call for a tapered
hole, but I also have no experience to say that eliminating them won't
effect the organ.

If Gavioli (et al) didn't taper the holes it might be because of the
expense versus the payback.  There is no question that whatever effect
a tapered holes has is going to have very small effect on the organ.

I only have 28 holes to taper so it's not really a big deal.  I guess
that, if I was building organs with 1000's of holes, I would want a
little engineering study done.   :-)
