Speaking of spool flanges (but not aluminum), I was told (I think by
someone at QRS) that roll manufacturers used to grind up old black
shellac phonograph records and form the resulting powder in an
injection-molding press into the spool flanges that are most commonly
found on old rolls. Recycling is not all that new.
