Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Mark Forer

Here's another neat movie I caught late last night on Turner Classic
Movies: "Ah, Wilderness", the classic 1935 movie from MGM.

In two very long scenes in a shady saloon, a young man is seduced by a
1908 version of a "B-girl" right in front of what appears to be a very
early Wurlitzer 65-note nickel-grabber. The piano is lit up and
playing -- the gal even drops a coin in to start it up -- but the music
appears dubbed, as it seems to play "Daisy" every time. No matter...

Turner Classic Movies seems to always feature the good stuff, every
night. That's why they call themselves "Movie Heaven". It's too bad
only 15% of cable households are able to receive it.
