Stiffeners in Vacuum Pumps
By Spencer Chase

Stiffeners are not necessary in vacuum pumps, but they can be helpful
to prevent noises caused by the fabric slapping against itself as the
bellows close. In slow speed steamboat pumps, this can be a problem.
Stiffeners were originally used and the pumps are very quiet. Without
the stiffeners, there is a slight, but annoying, tapping noise.
