"Hoch- und Deutschmeister Marsch"
By Matthew Caulfield

Re: Data On Obscure Musical Selections

I sent Bill Mintz all the information he asked for on the 8 American
selections listed, gotten by walking down one floor at Library of
Congress to the fabulous Copyright Office music file, 1898-1937. But
Hoch- und Deutschmeister is a German composition, and that will need
the expertise of MMD's European members.

W. H. Rehrig's Heritage encyclopedia of band music lists 4 different
marches titled Hoch- und Deutschmeister, by D. Ertel, by P. Fahrbach,
Jr., by W. Jurik, and by A. Klemm. I'm sure someone with more
knowledge of German marches than I have can narrow down the list,
hopefully to one.

I plan on wrapping up my work at Library of Congress the weekend of
January 16th, but it will be a real loss not to have access to the
resources of the Library and the Copyright Office. Sigh ...

[ This title appears several times in Gerhard Kern's list of book
[ music from the Carl Frei library, but no composer is given.
 [
 [ At http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/1943/hudmarch.htm
[ is a 1.6 MB (!) WAV file you can hear, and this text:
 [
[ "The Hoch- und Deutschmeister Marsch, written by Dominik Ertl, was
[ always popular with the people of Vienna. It was considered one
[ of the most "musical" of the marches of the Imperial Austrian Army,
[ but never achieved the status accorded to the march past
 [ Deutschmeister Regimentsmarsch."
 [
[ Bill Mintz, would you care to place a sound file at the MMD
[ Sounds web page, where "the ears of the world" may hear the
[ piano roll you have? -- Robbie
