Hi Bruce, Get it straight, MDF (medium density fiberboard)  :-)

To achieve the flat surface for modern polyester finishes, a lumber
core lid or side would be wavy.  Lids and side panels are plywood
anyways, being a core with a cross-banding veneer and a finish veneer.
The veneered MDF is not prone to warping or cupping of the lumber core.

Not that I'm defending anything, just illuminating the reason for
its use.
