Dear Philip Jamison,  I found in a tourist guide some more details
about Gera (40 miles south of Leipzig) whose museum seems to have some
mechanical music instruments [including] the beautiful Bruder barrel
organ with automatas,  No. 2 of the catalog of the Bruchsal exhibition
"Traurig-Schoen".

Gera is in the former Democratic German Republic, and was sadly known
then to house the political police (Stasi), with several thousand
employees.  The tourist office address seems to be now :

Perhaps they may give you some particulars about the city museum,
which seems to be in the old prison.  (Perhaps the barrel organ was
there for their Sunday enjoyment).

But probably a German member of the MMD could tell us more ...
