Ampico Artist Victor Wittgenstein

Horst Mohr asked for information concerning Victor Wittgenstein.  The
following is a quote from Elaine Obenchain's magnificent "A Complete
Catalog of Ampico Reproducing Rolls" :

  born 1886 in Lousiville, Kentucky
  died July 25 1961 at age 75 in New York, New York.

  Wittgenstein studied with McDowell in 1903, then with Joseffy for three
  years.  Thereafter he went to Europe for study with Varette Stepanoff
  and made his debut in Amsterdam in 1912.  He gave many successful
  concerts in Europe before returning to the United States where he
  performed with equal success.  In reviewing a 1922 New York recital
  the New York Tribune approved his performance with some reservations,
  describing his "technical brilliance with considerable expressive
  capacity, but a marked inclination, sometimes excessive, towards storm
  and stress.

  He made four rolls for Ampico :

  Concerto Op. 2 in G minor (Saint-Saens)
  Consolation No. 3 in D flat (Liszt)
  Mes Joies Nocturne Op. 74 No. 5 (Chopin-Liszt)
  Rhapsodie Op. 79 No. 2 in G Minor (Brahms)

Wittgenstein is also mentioned in Charles Davis Smith's "Complete
Duo-Art Catalog" , the entry reiterates much of the above information
and lists the thirteen Wittgenstein rolls which Duo-Art released.
