Mechanical Music on TV - "The Scarlet Pimpernel"
By Joyce Brite

Did anyone catch "The Scarlet Pimpernel" Sunday night on A&E? ["Arts &
Entertainment", a cable-TV show.] In a restaurant scene, there was a
unique music box in the background. It had pipes similar to a street
organ, and a rotating wheel at the front with two-dimensional head
figures on it. The posh restaurant was appropriately named "Cafe
Mechanique."

The story takes place in England and France at the time of the French
Revolution, however, this new version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was
filmed in the Czech Republic. I would speculate that this particular
music box normally resides in the Czech Republic, simply because it
would be cheaper for the film company to use a locally available item
rather than ship one in from elsewhere.

I hope that someone more knowledgeable about music boxes saw this
program and can identify and describe the machine better than I. The
good news is that A&E often reruns programs such as this, so if you
missed it the first time, you'll probably have another opportunity to
see it.
