Last week there was a discussion about the direction carousels rotate.
I made the general statement that American carousels turn counter-
clockwise and European ones clockwise.  Art Reblitz informs me that
the famous Eden Palais salon carousel, which is now in the Sanfilippo
collection, is one European machine that turns in the "American"
direction.

I have not seen the Eden Palais since it was set up and restored by a
team of artists and craftsmen on-site.  I did see it when it was under
wraps and still in dismantled, unrestored condition in a workshop in
Connecticut.  But it never occurred to me to look for such evidence as
Art reports.  His new book will have a lengthy description of the Eden
Palais, resulting from what must have been a lot of research and digging
by Art.  The carousel, which has its own facade and elaborate trappings,
is accompanied by an 89-key Gavioli built in Gavioli's Waldkirch
factory, with facade of its own built in its Paris factory.
