Videotape "Great Pianists of the 20th Century"
By Malcolm Cole

MMD readers who like classical piano music may be interested in a
new videotape which has been recently brought out by Warner/NVC Arts.
There are several Duo-Art artists, including Joseph Hoffman playing
Rachmaninov, Artur Rubinstein playing Chopin and Claudio Arrau playing
Brahms.

There is a good commentary by David Barenboim defining crucial
differences between modern and grand tradition precursors. There is
also an amazing piece of film of Emil Gilels enthusing Soviet airmen
by playing on a plinth in a field !

One of the earliest pieces of film is of Francis Plante playing and
recording Chopin in 1928. He looks to be about 80 then, so it is quite
unique. I can recommend this tape which in my opinion is better than
the earlier Philip's effort.

The number of the tape is 3984-29199-3 and I believe there is a DVD
coming out in the new year of the same material. The tape would make
a good Christmas present for any piano lover so put it on at your list!

Best wishes for the Christmas and holiday period,

Malcolm Cole,
The Player Piano Group London.
