I suppose that even sheet music _could_ technically be called a record!

 "Listen to that wonderful tune -- get out your staff paper
    and keep a record of it."
 "Okay, I'll record it for posterity."

But that's not going to communicate well to the masses, because the
word "record" connotes an image or copy that may be used to reconstruct
an event.  Most rolls and most sheet music have no event to record.
So if we intend to use language to communicate, we'd better find terms
that everyone understands.

I'd suggest that the use of "record" for any type of live performance
is appropriate, and communicates well.  But anything that does not
transcribe an event is probably misleading.  These are two _different_
meanings of the word "record".  I've heard organ pipes "speak", so
perhaps we should ask them?
