If one wants to drive a MIDI instrument from across a large room,
how long a cable can one use before running into problems?

 [ Mike Ames says that on one occasion he ran loosely twisted doorbell
 [ wire more than 100 feet.  In his museum he uses external power
 [ amplifier (line driver) and receiver boxes, sold several years ago
