1916 Stoddard Ampico Repeats Passages
By Moe Goldy

I have a 1916 Chickering with what I have been told is a Stoddard
Ampico player. The player has two separate controls on the right side
of the drawer, one of which will stop the player anywhere it is set and
reverse the player. The second control will stop the rewind anywhere
it is set and start the player playing again.

If I do nothing the player will keep repeating the same passage over
and over again. Releasing the two controls will return to normal
playing. I'd like to get more information about what I have, who
devised it, is it a one-off, when was it made, and how widespread was
it and any other pertinent facts? I assume it was meant to be used by
students who did not have an accompanist.
