Restoring Glossy Black Piano Finish
By Ricky Diggs

Hello MMDers! This is Ricky Diggs. I've done several large music
boxes in black lacquer. This is my suggestion for the piano, (circa
1902, owned by Robert Buckingham) .

1. Start with an automotive red primer, 3-5 coats, depending on
how porous the wood is. Step sand with wet/dry paper 220 to 400.

2. Next spray automotive black lacquer, 6 to 9 coats depending
   on finish desired.

3. Wet sand between every 3 coats.

4. Finish with 3 coats of clear automotive lacquer.

5. After 5 days buff out with an automotive polishing compound.

6. After buffing, finish with an automotive finishing glaze polish.

The key to achieving a great finish is not be in a hurry in between
coats of finish. Always allow finishes to be completely dry and cured
before next application. You will end up with an incredible black
gloss piano finish if you follow these steps.

I know that lacquer is not the original finish of the time period,
but for me the end results justify the means. My friend and one of my
clients, Larry Greenfield (an MMDer also), is the proud owner of one
of these music boxes trimmed with black lacquer. Good luck!

Regards,
Ricky Diggs
